Listening to Cesaria Evora

Since discovering Bebel Gilberto (see previous posts) I’ve got into ‘world’ music – Cesaria is from the tiny African island of Cape Verde. Described as the biggest name in ‘morna’ music – a mix of West African percussion with Portuguese fados (poetry set to music), Brazilian modhinas (samba) and modern jazz. She didn’t start recording till she was 45 and is affectionally known as the Bare Foot Diva as she appears on stage shoeless. The album I’ve got is ‘Voz D’Amor’ from 2003 – my fav song at the moment is ‘Isolada’. More info here.
