On my radio – last day

My final choice for Hit the Decs is Aganju by Bebel Gilberto. I put the first line of the song into Google’s translator (Portuguese to English) and got ‘I waited you in the moon to grow’, so I checked her website to find out more – “Aganju, takes its title from the name for the Brazilian divinity, Xango, in the African tongue of Yoruba. Xango is a major figure in the Brazilian religion of Candomble, which Bebel describes as “a devotion to the saints for protection, good health, better life. The saints and this whole culture were brought by the Africans when they came to Brazil as slaves.” Her mother Miucha (one of Brazil’s great voices) joins Bebel on the backing vocals.
